Looking to add a jackplate - need advice

Hey everyone,
I'm looking for jackplate advice. I have a 2006 Stratos 285 XL, with a 150hp Evinrude.

I'm considering a 10 inch Slidemaster jackplate. Is this too large on my boat? I'm told a 6 inch would be better...

Thoughts?
Appreciate your input.

Thanks,
ALBY

Having never had to deal with this, I can only offer my advice from what I've read online.

Most boats that length don't have more than 6" of set back. Anymore seems to not add any gains.

Thanks for the help guys. I'll call OBW in the morning.

CN: interesting that the factory installed a 10inch JP. I hope it'll fit my boat as well.

Keep em comin guys. Appreciate the ideas and input.

We put a 8 inch on a 2008 285 xl last year and it helped a lot. I know its not a ten but its more than a 6 inch

If you have cable steering, you can usually do a 6" JP without any issues. More than that, you'll probably need to install new cables or hydraulic steering.

I did say "MOST". Now, I went and did a little research on the 285 and of the boats listed on BBC, any of the ones that listed the size had a 6" on it. I would imagine an 8" would work alright as well but I wouldn't add a 10".

Ultimately, a call to OBW would be your best bet. They know the boat better than any of us would.

Hey Adam,

Thanks for looking into this. You are correct: the recommended jackplate for my 285ProXL is a 6ich jackplate.

This is as per Stratos recommendation.

I'm sure "anything" can be put on "anything". I think i'll stick with manufacturer recommendation for this upgrade.

Thanks for the input guys. This forum's been great help so far.
