Taking a fishing rod to Cuba

I'm heading to Cuba this sunday and want to take a 2 piece spinning rod. What's the best way to bring it? Do I have to list it as extra baggage? Can it be carry on?
Any tips would be appreciated.
Thanks
LL

I have not taken a rod to Cuba, but have travelled within Canada and to Costa Rica. I used one of those bazooka cases.
Best to check with the airline and what dimensions and if it counts towards your baggage limit, they often list fishing equipment and golf clubs as a separate item.
good luck - don't think I'll ever travel down south again without a rod and some basic tackle.
Cheers

Hi LL,
I have taken my Fenwick collapsible rod (link below) in a case and tackle many times to Cuba. I put it in my large suit case because it fits. If your 2 piece rod doesn't fit in your suit case, put it in a tube and it can be sent to large luggage at check-in. If you are flying Sunwing they don't usually charge for it as it is considered as sports equipment like a bike/ scuba gear or golf gear. I am pretty sure it can be a carry on if your tube fits the dimension. Check with the airline.
Hope this helps!
Have a great trip and tight lines.

You will most likely fish salt water so make sure you rinse thoroughly in the tub or shower after every use. That salt will kill all the gears in your reel.

good point on rinsing salt water off.
i didn't have a chance to fish with live bait when in Costa Rica but i have heard that raw shrimp are a good bait.
For lures i had success with the blue or white clackin raps on the reefs and kastmaster champ spoons.
