Where to look for lakers?

Do a search on this site...someone was asking about it just a few weeks ago. Great bass lake, but from my experience the Lake Trout fishery is not what it used to be. Used to mark huge baitballs of cisco's....not so much anymore. The main basin is where you'll find the Lakers...all the major bays are too shallow.The deep spots for trout are pretty obvious with sonar. The Lakers are often suspended, as opposed to relating to structure...mark 'em (and clouds of bait) and troll just above them. Pulling silver/blue bodybaits (J-11 is a good bet) behind the riggers has worked for us. If you find concentrations of fish, and there is no wind, try jigging with tubes or Vibrato's. However, it's a big lake, and you generally need to troll to cover water to find fish.

If you go after the green fish and brown fish...you'll have lots of fun, on this lake. Fish the slop in the back bays for buckets, and rocky points and deep weedlines for smallies.

Never been there so I checked out Navionics to plan how I would fish it for Lakers if I was going there. My first step is always to find areas where deep water and structure come together to figure out my trolling runs and possible jigging spots for calm water times. In the main lake section there are some nice points, islands and and in particular some real dandy sunken humps in the bottom end of the basin that I would be targeting. That will give me a good start and then trolling will locate those smaller pieces of structure that often seem to congregate fish, specially when associated with baitfish.
I marked the trolling runs in red and highlighted areas that would be worth checking out for jigging spots.

Like I said about first hand knowledge. I had checked the Fish On line site and there was no mention of pelagic fish species so I didn't get into that aspect of searching for baitfish schools. That being said, whether it's lakes like Charleston to Temagami to 31 Mile to Kipawa I've found that there is always still a good portion of the Lake trout population that relate to structure a lot. That's good for me as I never had a big boat to take on windy big water. No doubt though that baitfish schools will always attract Lakers in open water. You can see the hooks in the middle of the cloud.
I was going to mention thermocline, but it's way too early yet.
