Hello,

My name is Charles and I'm new to fishing in the Ottawa area. I come from B.C/Alberta where all we really do is fly fish for trout. I recently decided I wanted to try fishing Ottawa and the surrounding areas but I have NO clue where to go. I've spent a solid 16 hours driving and parking around Ottawa and the surrounding areas but it seem there are really no good spots to shore fish (since I don't have a boat).

Today I drove up to Mississippi Lake but also didn't seem to find any place to cast from shore that wasn't someones back yard or a boat launch. I really want to get into bass fishing or to be honest ill take anything that isn't a 4 inch sunfish. That seems to be all I'm able to catch in the Ottawa river. I'm willing do drive up to an hour and even willing to rent a boat if it's going to make a good day of fishing.

Any tips/advice for fishing in the Ottawa area would be awesome.

I currently have a 6.6 foot spinning rod with 10lbs line I have a bunch of jerk baits, spinners, soft plastics(craws,senkos), jigs,frogs, bunch of spoons for pike. I feel like I just need some spots. I'm tired of catching 6 inch fish and I'm not to sure on casting techniques or anything.

I'm also probably looking to purchase a little boat so I can actually fish some of the nearby lakes.

Drive south along the Rideau. Wherever there is a lock should be a shore fishing location.

I shore fished the Ottawa area for many years and still do, even though I have a boat as well.

Lots of places to try, some are dry from land and other you should wade.

On the Rideau.
Wading down from strathcona park to Cummings island at Montreal Rd. Good for bass.
Robinson Field, Rideau River, you can fish from shore -- west side of river. Some good bass and even a walleye in evenings

Carleton, down to Bronson bridge
Hoggs back falls and downstream - all shore fishing but you need to be ok with fast water
Blacks rapids - walleye here, and you need to fish faster water
Long Island Locks has some good water below the dam.

Ottawa River
-- wading is best (wait til low water) and in the Champlain and Remic Rapids you can catch 100s of bass (smallmouth) by casting a jig/twister and crank it back fast.

Welcome to Ottawa,

I attached a map with a fishing spot where you can catch a bunch of fish.
Two years in a row I caught there walleyes at dusk (end of May). I caught there big sucker and catfish are always there.
Use technique that called plunking, or dropshot. You can cast from shore if you don't like to wet your feet, or wade into the water as much as you comfortable to.
Cast into the pool near the current. This should work. If you see tall slim guy with a beard - its probably me...

And another spot...
You can park you car nearby.
Go down to the water on a big rocks.
Use the same technique what I described in first letter.
Here you can easily snag but fish is there...
