Well my buddy and I hit the water Thanks Giving morning, in search of a new fish "species" for me.... splake!! A speckled trout lake trout cross that does not get a lot of attention, but put up a scrappy fight and are suppose to be great table fare.

We launched around 7 am and started casting the shallows with spoons looking for splake cruising the shallows looking for a meal. The water was still a little warm and our first fish of the day was not part of the plan but fun regardless.

So we changed up and started trolling a little deeper, we start marking some fish and getting a couple hits and it does not take too long to boat our first splake of the day and my first splake ever!!

We continue trolling marking lots of deep fish.... if I have left my downriggers on the boat we would have been set, but luck. So we used some leadcore and snap weights to get our lure down deeper, and that seemed to be the ticket.

We called it a day around 1 pm boating numerous splake, bass and pike through out the morning.

Looking forward to having these fillets for dinner tomorrow with some wild mushrooms.

Back to work tomorrow... so I can plan next weekend's fishing trip!!!
