I started building an 8'X8' ice shack a few weekends back. Last weekend I was given a free 8'X10' tent trailer that had been gutted and used for a skidoo trailer. Now I'm thinking of building right on top of it. Is this a stupid idea since my floor will be around 18" off the ice? I'd hate to lose fish because I couldn't reach down through the floor in time to grab them.

Anyone else have a shack on a trailer? What are your thoughts?

I ahve heard other people doing this, but they take the wheels off and block up the trailer to a hight that will fit a standard car jack. Let me know how it goes.

Have seen lots of trailers of all kinds used. They leave the wheels on and drop those tubes one uses for pouring cement posts from the trailer hole to the ice. As the winter progresses usually the ice gets deeper; not much of a reach from the floor to the water, and your "hut" doesn't get iced in, just bank the sides well, put some poly under the trailer tires, and use a really big tube so you have room to gaff etc.

I had one of those trailers a long time ago and sold it......... ......

I have fished out of a shack like that. Taking the wheels off when you get to the ice helps. If your still to high, get a short gaf. This shack was the cats meow, not catching fish throw the weels on and move. It was built with tin studs and sprayed insulation, very light and warm.

No problem with doing what you suggested there BM (Somehow that doesn't sound right)

Assuming the hole will be 2' square, I'd be sure to build myself a small landing/scoop net out of nylon fly screen and an old piece of curtain rod attached to a good sturdy dowel.

This way you can keep the hole clear from ice and slush and scoop your fish as they surface.

Would work if you build up/in the sides to keep the wind and light out. Cut a 2x6' hole through the centre and use a net. Benches on both sides, heater on the end and you are all set.

I thought you made the holes outside and just stayed inside to keep warm.

In which case, I would think windows would be the answer to this problem.

Although fishing in your hut is pretty much the norm, i don't do it.

Putting holes under your hut or right next to only adds to the amount of water and slush around your hut come late Feb-March. Sometimes you end up blocking it up so high that you can't get your auger to punch through let alone trouble with your gaf.
