Slow day on Simcoe

I've posted this report in other places, so this is for the benefit of members that don't travel to other boards! This report is from our trip of Sat Jan 29th.

Well, even though the fish were not biting, we had a great day. Hawk and I along with Rob, Gord and Dave headed out with Steve's Huts. We brought along an auger and drilled jigging holes and set up tip-ups around the two huts we rented. The only fish landed (other than Hawks Smelt) was a nice Whitefish caught by Gord Chong.




The ride seemed to take forever to get about 15 crammed guys out to the huts.





The day was bright and not too cold as Hawk cooked up a breakfast of Eggs, Corned Beef, Sausage and potatoes, it was fantastic to have after our "Breakfast of Champions" (Thanks Mepps!).

Actually just saw a little blurb on the weather channel, on a derby being held on Simcoe this weekend. The people were amazing! Looked like hundreds....

A friend fished in it and said the wait to sign up was four hours. 3000 people entered and only 260 fish caught, just pike and perch.
But I think it was an "off day" everywhere on Simcoe.

It was to bad Perching on by gilford. I caugth 20 fish before 10 am all 9 and 10". Then it slowed down only caught about 10 or 12 after that. Fished from 8 am tell 430pm.

Also had what probably would have one that derby on my line for about 7 or 8 secounds then snap . Saw a fish on my finder shooting up from bottom looked over and my rod went down twice really hard picked it up quick cause i saw it before it hit my bait(on finder). I set the hook and the fish tour so much line off my reel before it snaped it was incredible my reel has never been moving like that even when i caught muskies. Must have been a HUGE PIKE.


I have been out with steves huts twice this year. One laker to show for it hopefully the third time is the charm.

Hey man do you mind telling what kind of set up you use when out with steves huts. Just Tip ups or do you use minnows and weight on Rods aswell? Just looking for some good solid techniques to use so that when i dont catch fish i know its not because of a bad set up.What type of line do you use on your tip ups? do you use a top line and if so how high off bottom?
Hope you dont mind all teh questions I am very new to simcoe and would appriciate alll the advice you can handle to spill out.

No problem, I use a Simcoe Tip-up with a three way spreader right on the bottom for whitefish. I smack them hard on the hookset so I use a forgiving line "Siglon V" nice and stretchy so you don't tear loose from the soft lips of the whitefish.
My other line is a Jigging rod and reel for lakers. It has a quality "low stretch" braided line with a mono leader.
I believe the most important part of your outfit is your hook. It must be sticky sharp, strong and small!

Thanks Slop, I know I was with Pros yesterday, but the fish were not expecting us. Next time we'll call ahead! It was a very enjoyable outing, with great company.
