Well, the lake is still there; still pretty, covered with ice 2+ ft. thick.
We were on the lake at 6:30, fished a ways out from the boat launch. No results there, so we moved to the South side of an island where we have had some luck in the past.
I got a ling on and had it up to the hole......broke off.
Thats it!!! Ain't no more. No bites..........ugly minnows??
Got some nice pics of the sunrise, islands, etc. No pics in camera when I got home.........Back to Wallymart with this one and spend a bit more for a decent camera. Glad it messed up now, and not when I really wanted to keep some pics.
We spoke to some of the regulars who have huts on the lake, and they said the fishing had been slow.
Ah well, twas a nice morning anyhow. Rideau Lake this afternoon.
Regards: Jigs.

Ever hear of any rainbows being caught in there?
According to the stocking list there has been over 67,000 rainbows put in there in the last 6 years.

Hey Jigs
Is that the Otter lake outside of Smiths Falls ? Friends of mine have a cottage there and we trolled that lake pretty hard with out any luck , exc ept for some small pike . One of the guys at the tackle store in town told me he doesn't even fish there any more .

Otter lake has become a mystery too alot of people.....me included...
The fish are there I'll tell ya....Gordo and I have had some great days on the smallies....when we head back in we see clouds of fish in the deep water....large hooks.....not bait....we always say we're gonna drop a downrigger into them......but then we hit the edges for the smallies...
We will be targetting whatever is down there a few times....just to see...
I may even head out on the ice soon.....once I have a vexilar..

Wolfe;...........NO, not much.

A few perch and 3 small crappies. New camera is super so far. Now just have to catch some fish to post.
RJ: The redeeming feature of Otter is its smallies. Some days they are hot, some days you can't buy one. Your right when you mention the fish finder. Lake is full of something......
I know everyone can talk about the "usters"........We uster catch lots of big perch, pike, smallmouth bass, and "some" lakers in Otter. Most people who fished there did. The key word there is "lots", and thats probably why we don't catch "lots" now. C & R was unheard of back then. Too bad.
Hound: Yepper, that's the one.
Nice weather eh?

The Otter Lake near Smith Falls was stocked with Splake for several years. Not sure if it still is. I tried a few times to get them without any success. I used similar methods to geting Lakers on Big Rideau! I haven't fished it in about 10 years though!!!!

Hey like RJ said there is something down there and lot's of them, but I haven't seen one boat this past summer with downriggers down trying to get them.
They have stocked the lake the with Splake in the past, but haven't done that for years. As for the rainbows jale6666 is correct with his numbers they have stocked them in the last 6 years but I haven't seen anyone catch them. Most of the guys I know from up there say there are way too many bait fish and it's tough to get them to hit a lure. Not sure how much I believe that, but this summer (Thanks to King-Me) I will have my new Scotty downriggers going to get them.
I was wondering if anyone has ever used "cut bait" when downrigging? I saw a couple of fishing shows this weekend and they were using "cut bait" to land some nice fish. How do you rig them and what would be the best for Lakers and rainbows?
Also don't believe what anyone says about the smallie fishing on Otter... It's terrible! Not worth your time @ all

Gordo,
Last year I tried cut bait for Lakers, but I found the crank baits and spoons caught as many fish... with out all the mess and smell in the boat.
The big one I have found over the past two years fishing lakers is attaching huge lake trolls to the downrigger ball as an attraction. This really works on a few lakes at bringing the lakers in to take a look.

Hey Gordo we brought in a lot of bass on the middle east side of the lake . I found live bait worked best .
I trolled the lake for a week using downriggers and various lures and only had one hit and miss . We marked alot at the south end off an island just outside moonlight bay (I think its called ) and at the other end before that kids camp in 80 ' .
