Girls Can Auger, Too

Remember I told you we got an auger over the wknd? Well, we took the boys out on Otisco Lake for an hour or so on Sunday afternoon. We didn't catch a blasted thing...not even a hit, at least that this inexperienced ice fisherperson noticed! There was this older guy set up on a weedbed and he was pulling in small panfish every few mintes. Made me feel like a dufous! The kids were at their worst & the wind kicked in after a bit, but all-in-all it was still a worthwhile outing. It's always good just to be out there...

Watching Brian use the new auger with ease, I asked if he thought I'd be able to do it. He thought no problem, so I drilled my first hole and it wasn't too tough -- except when I stopped for a sec: MISTAKE! A little hard getting the blade moving again, but I managed. Now I know I can drill a hole on my own, if need be.

Nice form, there, Wolfe! Don't worry, the fish will come. After being skunked the last two times I was out, we went to Constance Lake (first time this year) late Sunday afternoon, I caught a 15" pike and Bowzog caught a couple of small fat perch.

Markus, Brian has his sites on a 40hp engine to beef up our boat. However, I want a cottage more than I want a faster boat, so tune in...

Slushy, congrat's on breaking the skunked streak with your pike. You do have the knack for those fellows, don't ya? If only I lived closer, I could tag along with you and get some much needed pointers!

Practice makes perfect...a few more holes and you'll have that down to a science. If you're looking for somewhere to practice, I know a nice spot on Buckham's near a certain smallish ice shack you can feel free to drill all the practice holes you want there.

Saskie, you know if it weren't so far...I might just volunteer my services, in EXCHANGE, of course, (!) for some ice fishing tips!

WIG, there was no Vexilar (I was spying, er I mean observing). 8)
But I wonder what he was using for bait. I had a teeny, tiny 1/16 oz jig w/ a tiny waxie grub on.

Does anyone ever use plain old WORMS? Or would they succumb too quickly in the super cold water? Would that even matter? I figure I could keep them alive in a thermal case for a short trip out.

Some people use worm bits, so, no, they don't have to be alive.

You work that pole girl.

Some might say if a woman can work a manual ice auger, a man could work a washing machine. Me, I'm not one of them. :P

Keep drillin' Wolfe!!!

I hear M.T. uses white spinnerbaits on the ice, so anything's possible.

Wolfe:

If you were after perch and they weren't hitting the 1/16th, wouldn't hurt to go up in size.

A 1/8th or 1/4 oz jig tipped with a 2" minnow and a white or yellow twister tail is not too big for jumbo perch and crappies. If they hit and you're not getting a hook set, THEN drop the size because they are probably smaller fish. (if you want to catch smaller fish).

We usually fish perch right on or up about 6" from bottom. Crappies are where you find em. Usually higher.

Weed beds are a sure bet. Just on the edge of one near a drop is even surer.

You know all this, I just like to see myself type, right?

Good luck (again) ; Jigs.
