This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

need lake trout tips

Post by girl-fisher »

I was wondering when I can start fishing for lake trout. I will be fishing on Camp Lake just north of huntsville. I have never had a down rigger but I was looking at a clamp on style at the bass pro shop. The down rigger came with a rod. Can I use my spinning reel on it? Any tips on how to use a down rigger and what lures would be helpful. I also want to try for some brook trout in the streams. Any thing better than worms? Thanks if you can help me.

GF, Not to sure about the lakers, other that don't waste your money on that rig. Get a few dippsy divers instead.

As for the brookies, fly's work well as do small in-line spinners. Worms work, why not use'm?

good luck

Girl-Fisher,

I don't know what the Lake Trout regs are for your area, but if you can fish right after ice out you'll find laters in the shallow warmer (relatively speaking) water. No need for a downrigger till they head deep when the water gets too warm for them.

girl-fisher,

I do a few lake trout trips every year in the Parry Sound area and here's my advice.

I aggree with Todd - as soon as possible after ice-out is the best time as they are close to the surface until it gets too warm for them.

Every may we have good success trolling with
- Little Cleos - gold, blue, red, or orange colours work best for us
- jointed rapalas - blue and silver
- williams spoons

We usually have the line out about 100 to 200 feet.

In the summer I return to the same spot with my downriggers. I use my spinning gear with the same lures I mentioned abobe. I haven't found the need for a specific trolling combo.

Depending on how deep the lake you go to is though, you may not need the the downriggers and the dipsy's or some lead core line may suffice.

If you'll be in the Huntsville area Lake Trout may be open already as some of the lakes in DIV 15 are open after jan 1 for lake trout. If not then it's probably the same as other trout openers.
