Mississippi Weekend Report

Post by Todd B. »

Fergusons Falls (Sat)
Well two of us head out to Fergusons Falls Saturday to hoping to tangle with some of the big smallies that frequent that stretch of water. Well I'm guessing the high pressure system that moved through the day before knocked the bass down as the bite was pretty poor compared to previous visits. We saw a number of big fish but they just turned their noses up to any of the flies we offered up to them.
Well as we were about to call it an evening, we were greated by a nice hatch of Giant Drakes, which triggered a topwater feeding frenzy. Switching to stimulators we probably hooked into another 10 SM each with a couple in the 12" range....lots of fun catching SM on dries!

Blakeney (Sun)
Well I take the gf out to Blakeney since she can always catch good numbers of SM in the pocket water. Water levels were down a little making wading/scrambling easy. We decide to try the tailout on the far east side...She loses a nice 13" SM, then lands a huge 13" Fallfish. I bring in another eye (14") for the second time in a week there. Hmmm...I think I know where I'm doing my Fall fishing this year! Overall it was a great day of fishing. The bite was definitely on and we managed half a dozen SM in the 12" range.

Paya,

I've been fishing the Miss the last month. The drive is longer but the action has been worth it. If you're referring to Billings, I pretty much only fish there in the Spring and Fall. Long Island is much better for SM during the season. But give the eyes I've caught this past week on the Miss, I might be spending more time on it this fall.

I've been catching them below the tailouts at Blakeney. One of the tailouts drops away to 15' right away. Prime water for big SM and eyes...I'm sure the odd muskie is around as well.

Right on Todd. Smallies on the dries in good numbers sound like fun and excitement to me. :D
