Nutbar here,

I'm still slugging it out on the lakes. Today at Shiner I had wind, rain, snow and sleat but also a nice 20" bow caught on a PT crayfish. Caught two other smaller rainbows. Not bad for 3 hrs at the end of the day. If I take jiggy up on his offer to drill me a hole I know exactly where to put it. I guess I could bring my Ikea vinyl tlilting chair and jig a crayfish with my fly rod.

I remember ice fishing with my dad about 50 years ago on lakes in BC. It was OK. Got my first taste of whiskey.

Ice fishing isn't what bit used to be. The days of freezing your butt off sitting on a pail are over! With equipment like portable shelters and power augers I can arrive at my destination cut holes set up the trap turn on the heater and be fishing in comfort in five minutes 8) Don't get me wrong I love fly fishing and even tie my own flies, but when the season ends I don't stop fishing  I couldn't imagine not fishing all winter I would loose my mind :? I just recently purchased an ATV so I will be able to hit some of those lakes that are a bit more difficult to get to this winter  [/url]

Was at Shiner the Friday before Rememberance Day.

Caught nothing... lot's of bites though. Lot's of other fishermen too

Didn't bring my Fly rod or canoe... what a mistake. When the sun came out there was lots of jumping going on and some bugs were out flying just above the surface. Go figure... I never thought about fly fishing this late in the season, newbie.

Thinking of taking another kick at the can before the ice sets in. What flies do you suggest besides what has been mentioned. Dry flies?

If I go again I'll bring the canoe as I can't cast from shore worth a 5H1T, without getting hooked up in the trees.

Buzzer,

Fall is the BEST time for fly fishing and right up freeze up. The thermocline is gone so the fish can be anywhere. Sure, spring is good too but I think that has more to do with our anxiousness to get on the water again. Fish in the fall are "bulking" up for the winter and take large flies representing large "whatever". Any kind of minnow imitation should be good.

I'm getting my best action on crayfish imitations which I usually reserve for browns and bass. I was at Shiner a week or so ago and noticed a crayfish close to shore. I put one on and its been the best producer for the last three outings. Also good is a mahogany bead head bugger. Last Friday I actually saw one on the surface. I found out that Shiner is stocked by the Lanark club as well as MNR so if anyone here knows how to get in touch with them, let me know. I want to contribute since I fish there a lot. The 20 incher I caught was close to the shore. I'd like to get those pike to feed the coons.

I'm going there tomorrow. Can't work in the office when we have weather like this!
