Free at last! Free at last!

Post by bobfly »

"Thank God, we are free at last" - Martin Luther King, Jr.

The Calabogie Lakes are free of ice and its great to be partially human again. I'll need a few more go's at it to be fully myself. A bit wet today but two brookies on my new 3wt felt just great.

Now if I can only figure out what those "blobs" are on my fishfinder screen, I'm sure I'll catch more. According to the instructions, they could be anything: bubbles, floating debris, sticks. I couldn't get any of those "arches". Any fishfinder experts here?

Sweet. Way to go Bob!

Check to make sure that your transducer is set properly...if not you will get "disturbance" on screen...

Full sinking line at this point?

Actually, one was caught on a full sink and the other on a floating line. The full sink had a crayfish and black fur nymph but as the fish got off, I don't know which one it was. The floating line had a deer hair popper followed by a P-Quad. The brookie took the P-Quad which has always been a good early spring fly for me.

bobfly.

I am floating my transducer on a chunk of wood and I am sure it is flat but it may be getting some disturbance from the paddling. I'll see how it works on the tube but that's for later.

I set up my transducer on a flat piece of metal and attached another flat piece to create a "Plus" sign (+).

I fold it together and slide it through the ring on the side of my tube, then spread it open into the + position. It holds well and stays out of the way.

I'll try to post a pic of the set up if you are interested, it works well.

Thanks for the info on the patterns. I've never fished more than one fly at a time. How much space do you leave between them?

Cheers,

Maker

Oops! I may have been premature in my statement that all the Calabogie lakes are free of ice. I was fishing on Belanger on Friday and it was completely free of ice. The temperature of the water was a surpising 39F and so I assumed all the neighbouring lakes were likewise.

Well, this morning I went to Shiner on the other side and it is still frozen over. My other brookie lake in the area has shore ice and I was unable to launch. So I headed back over to Belanger. There were some campers there and they told me that Battery Lake which is close by is still frozen over. On top of that Belanger temperature was now 44F. This is one strange lake. Barry Lake which is right before Belanger was also free of ice. So go figure. Maybe some of the other lakes in the chain are OK. They are also doing a lot of road work so I guess they will be logging. I'll check out my local sources and report back.

Mak'er a Lak'er,
That sounds like a good system for the transducer. If you can post a pic that would be great. Right now I am using it on my canoe as I'm uncomfortable in my tube while the water is cold. I've got the old fashion "troutcatcher" model and I am too much into the water. I will check out my tube to see if that kind of arrangement will work. With the canoe, I have the transducer mounted on some wook and let it float behind but I suspect it is not working quiite right.

Oh yes, I got two brookies today. Both on a small PT crayfish. But amazingly enough there was a midge hatch. Tried some chirominids but no luck. There were some rises.

Cheers for now.

I'll be at the Fishing show tomorrow tieing flies at the OFS booth.
