Decided to get out for a bit a wet the old fly line at Black Rapids this evening for a bit. My intention was to play with the panfish for a while before going after the eyes later in the evening. Seems the panfish haven't moved into the shallows (below the dam) yet, as I only managed on rock bass, while a number of OOS SM decided that my #16 PT flashback nymph was a nice snack.
I'd have to say that it seems to be an atypical start to the season there. Usually you get lots of panfish, then a few weeks later you'll start to see more and more SM. I did see quite a number of muskie fingerlings in the shallows though.
Switching to a beadhead woolly bugger which I've had good success when fishing for eyes didn't produce this evening, though I'm sure if stayed until dark I would have managed a couple. Unfortunately I wasn't in the mood to put up with the black flies and mosquitos.
