Made one last trip to the Ausable last weekend. Conditions were challenging again but for different reasons. It poured rain on Friday night and we only fished for about half hour an hour when the rain eased off. We had some action on size #24 blue wing olive dries. Normally I don't like fishing flies that small but that's all they would look at.
Saturday was sunny but the river was running dirty with run-off from the storm. We fished the evening blue wing olive hatch and caught a couple, again on #24 dries.
The highlight of the trip was on Sunday evening when my father landed an 18" rainbow. After trying a number of different dry flies he decided to switch to a black woolley bugger. It worked (see picture below).

Ausable
I also fished the Ausable a couple of early mornings this past long weekend. It is a good thing it was raining - actually, it will most likely take a week of rain for the river to get back to shape again. I managed to land a couple of browns, 15 and 10 inch, and missed 3. I managed to only have any action via streamers and even then the fish where very fussy. I think the fishing will be much better in a another week. You can fish the catch-and-release section all year long.

Thanks for the report. I heard that they were getting rain down there but from the looks of it they needed a lot of rain to bring it back to normal. I don't think I'll make it down to the Ausable again this season. I'm heading down to the Salmon / Chateaugay for a couple of days on the weekend for one last trip before they close on the 15th.
