For anyone that has been thinking of fishing the West Branch Ausable but have yet to do so, there is a good article on the river in the latest Eastern Fly Fishing magazine. While the article does not name any particlar spots that aren't already well known, it does provide a good overview of the fishing available and the challenges posed.
While only given passing mention, there are also a number of other rivers and ponds/lakes within 30 minutes that offer additional trout fishing opportunities

I finally got a chance to read the article. The author was fishing there a week after my last trip there in the fall. Conditions were tough then with low water.
I agree with the author, it's a tough river to fish because of the fishing pressure. His statistic really puts it into perspective: 40% of the North American population lives within 5 hours drive of the river. I agree that if you catch 6 fish in a day you're doing well. Although I have seen 16 fish caught in a day (not by me though...). It's best fished during the week.
The article is a good overview of the river if you haven't been there. While the fishing can be tough, it's a beautiful river to fish.
Cheers,
Salar.
