Water Boatman (Corixia) Flies

Hi Everyone,

Has anyone had any experience fishing water boatman (corixia) patterns for trout?

I was watching Sport Fishing on The Fly a couple weeks ago and they were doing very well on with water boatman flies. From what I've read water boatman are active in the spring and the fall. One article I read said that the two main food sources after ice-off are leeches and water boatman. It would be interesting to try them locally.

I think Bob has indicated that he's opened up a few trout to find them full of boatmen. I've seen them on the tiny brookie lake that we've talked about. I'll probably tie up some surface and subsurface versions for this season.

There are a couple of subsurface boatman pattern's in Bob Sheedy's Top 50 Stillwater pattern's book. I'll try tying up a few for spring time.

The surface boatman pattern on Sport Fishing on the Fly looked more like fly gluing than fly tying

I've got a couple patterns from the UK Fly Fishing / Fly Tying magazine that I'll post. I think one of them makes use of the Loon UV Knotsense. You should give the stuff a try if you haven't already. It's a lot easier to use than the 5min epoxy. Cures in seconds using a UV light.

As a tying note, keep in mind that waterboatmen swim rightside up while back swimmers swim upside down. Apply your weight, colors, wing cases, etc accordingly.
