What's going on in the Adiorndacks?

Post by Manfred »

This is the second and more important of two questions I am posting tonight.

Does anyone have any new reports about the Northern New York Rivers?

On Tuesday 15 July, my buddy and I gave up on our canoe trip (see the thread about Quebec brook trout rivers). Instead, we went down to the Adirondacks. We fished three rivers: the Salmon in a few places near Malone; the Au Sable at a couple of places between Lake Placid and Wilmington; and West Canada Creek just below Trenton Falls Dam. We also oggled a lot of women that were arriving in Lake Placid for the Ironman Triathlon on the upcoming weekend and climbed Mount Algonquin (I think).

The Au Sable was a more accessible place for night fishing than the Chateaguay. I caught about my biggest rainbow yet just as it was getting dark one evening. The water was very low. It made for pocket-water fishing that was very, very different than on the Salmon or Chateaugay.

About 8:30 a.m. the one day, I saw what I understand to be a fall of Trico spinners. It was like a flotilla of tiny, tiny sailboats. The trout were just sipping them up. My sailboat was not sipped up. I really want to try again.

If people have read about West Canada Creek in Newman or Streeter but have not fished it, I would add my recommendation that you try it if you can. My buddy fly-fished for the first time a few days earlier near Malone as we started our trip. We both caught decent-sized browns in the no-kill section. Within about 500m downriver from the dam there is a good variety of water types.

It has been a couple of weeks since I have been down and the itch is starting to come back.

Does anyone have any reports on the Salmon / Chateagay near Malone or on the other rivers?
