Redington 6wt 9066 Wayfarer rod

Post by JeanDorais »

Me again,

Have 4wt and 6wt Wayfarer rods (7' 6" and 9' respectively), 6 pieces. I really like(d) the 6wt right up until I started casting the TFO Signature 5wt 9' rod. :(

I'm finding that the TFO is smoother and better suited to my style of casting (I'm the guy you see casting who looks like he's barely moving...that's how slow my casting is!) I really, really like slower rods. Again it's a question of preference and experience...I've been doing it for 5 years and I know what works and what doesn't for me. I did cast a ZG Helios 5wt 9' on the weekend, and couldn't get the hang of it- the tip is just too 'fast' for me. But that is one incredibly light rod. WOW!!

Do I keep the 6wt and use it for those 'possible' big fish I may encounter at some point, or do I try and sell the Redington 6wt and replace it with another TFO Signature in the same weight/length (6wt, 9')?

Opinions welcome, as always.

Cheers,

Jean

By "replace" do you mean "buy the 6wt TFO at the same time as the 5wt TFO and use the Redington 6wt as a spare/travel/guest"?

Not sure I'd hang on to the Redington. It's a very nice rod and has served me well. I'm thinking more of selling the Redington and buying a TFO of the same size/weight (9' 6wt).

As I cast more and more rods and get comfortable with my casting, I know what works for me and what doesn't. The Sage Launch 6wt I started with was a 'bad' rod for me in that it didn't match my style of casting (s-l-o-w). I replaced it with the Redington 9066 at the end of season 3 (I'm in season 5 now), and liked it a lot...until I started casting the TFO.

Like in astronomy- where the best scope for you is the one you'll actually use, the best rod for me is the one I'll use. The other side of the argument is that I already own it, it works why spend more money- my new waders are already going to run me something like 450$ :(
