Visiting Winchester brought fly rod

Post by BC flyfisher »

Im out from Bc visiting my mom and brought my fly rod and Vise and would love some local input on a coulple of locations where I might have some luck.In bc I fish for various types of trout, Bull trout being my fav, but I'll target just about anything that swims.I didnt bring waders buy I love to wet wade, in freezing glacial runoff.
I prefer river and stream fishing but just want to hook up somthing as close as posible to Winchester.I was thinking of going to try the Rideau any where between Kemptville and Manotick.
Thanks for any input .

Welcome to the site. I'm not too familiar with the Winchester area but you'll be able to hook into bass and pike along the Rideau. Tie up some size #6 olive or black bead head Woolly buggers and you'll get into fish.

Cheers,

Salar.

Pop into Paddletales and speak to Ed. He might be able to help you out as well.

BC,

Probably the closest location for you to wet wade would be on the Rideau along the long Island section in Manotick. On the map you can park at the Long Island Park, which is immediately on your left as your take Barnsdale Rd, east across the bridge. From there you can wade upstream or down. Just keep in mind that the rocks can get slippery.

Cheers,
Todd

Pints: Actually his mom was in my store looking for advice. Since I am totally clueless about fly fishing, my advice to her was to investigate this site. Hopefully someone can help him out.

Thanks for thinking of my store though

Ed

drive into Ottawa and wade the remic rapids on the Ottawa River. You can park at the Champlain bridge and explore from there You can get lots of smallies and maybe even a brown trout.

good day exploring and fishing

Post by BC flyfisher »

Thanks for the tips I wen't to the Long Island and walked down stream casting into the deeper holes.I had some good luck and landed a 12"+ Small Mouth on a black wooly Booger. It was just what I was looking for I also saw a friken two foot monster fish. Im not to sure what it was but it had red fins with white along the edges .When i casted to it wasn't interested in what i was selling.I also had good luck on a peacock body nimph with the smaller rock bass,if thats what they were anyway.
I had a bit of trouble with hooking the weeds I just striped in faster but still was using floting line with six feet of sinking rocket .
It was super easy to find the first spot to fish because of the trash AKA.
worm containers left behind from worm chuckers. Why when you find a good spot to fish youve got to leave your crap lying around once your done fishing there.

Most likely a sucker. You can catch them but it requires patience and dead drifting a nymph under their snout. Try a #10 hares ear.

Well the LM are pretty uncommon for that particular stretch of water. The SM tend to be somewhat greener there as well. As for spots, some of the best ones are further downstream and out in the middle of the river, hence you don't have to put up with the garbage, etc, though I agree with your critical comments regarding the bait fishermen.

As an aside, there are some big muskie in that stretch as well. Hook into a small bass and you never know what might decide to snap him up! LOL

Dist,

I was in this area yesterday. I parked at the park and initially walked over to the thicker part of the Rideau, because I was wet wading with just bare feet, i couldn't find a decent place to go in at. Dissapointed, I started walking back and went across the parking lot back towards the road where the bridge is and got into some water there.

I believe this is the same place the original poster was talking about, but not sure what this stretch of water is called (as I'm new to the Ottawa area). Anyways I had a few real small smallies on the line that eventually jumped and spit hook on me. Hopefully this is the area you are all talking about, if so is there a name for that stretch?

Sean.

Hey BC FlyFisher, welcome to the site.

Not sure if you're still here, but I'm sure Greg from Float, Paddle and Fly might be able to help you out in this area.
