Well I finally did it!!

I took the plunge and bought some fly gear.

I had talked about it and considered it for quite some time now and seeing as Green Drake here in Ottawa had a pretty good sale on I decided I would take advantage of saving some money and buy now.

My introductory set up into fly fishing consists of

Orvis Clearwater 2 908-4 Tip 9.5 , 9' 8 wt.line 4 pc 3-1/2 oz rod
Orvis Size 4 (gold) 72 ET 61 15 reel
2 spare spools
Stillwater invis. sub-surface line
Mainstream full sink line
Wonderline power taper Gen 3
SA tippets
Orvis leaders and an Orvis Fly bag.

Oh ....and six flies ...

Now all I have to do is either wait till spring, find a spot with open water in winter or move south

Can't wait to try it oout.

Hey Matt.....now we're talking!!!.....what type of flies did you get??...I don't use the fly gear for Muskies because I love trolling for them..

Trout though is a different story ...what a rush to be palming your reel and watching your line peel out ....let's get out this spring

I just dropped in to Green Drake and bought some tying material and a few tools. Need a good vice I have a few in mind after some Research. I want a second rod also. 10 feet for 4 or 5 weight line..

My first fly rod is the same one you have. It's a good rod for bombing those big flies out there and will handle a big fish with ease.

The Stillwater line is really good for running big streamers like Deceivers a couple of feet underwater.

Not sure what flies they are. Ones a popper, that I do know. A couple sink and a couple are dry flies. I'll take some pics and post them tomorrow.

Congrats on your purchase. And good idea to buy the xtra spools.
Sinking, floating, sink tip it or even lead core!

Sounds like you got a nice setup to use for next season's LM and Pike and possibly steelhead, though the fast action (9.5 tip) could become an issue when you have to step down to 6lb tippet due to leader shy fish.

As for your "everything else" category, you will quickly discover that the various weights and actions of fly rods are similar to conventional specialized rods. Fishing for say small trout or pannies with your 8wt will be like using your muskie setup for say 10" smallies.

Not sure what pics 1 and 6 are but they are dry flies. Pannies and trouts will eat those and if they are big enough, smallies will smack them..

Pics 2, 4 and 5 are Woolly Buggers are they are leech imitations.

Pic 3 is a Muddler Minnow and is a small minnow imitation.

Pretty much everything will eat WBs and MMs. On a new water, an olive or black WB is the first thing I tie on. One of my largest fly rod smallies was caught on a Muddler Minnow.
