Ah, "the River-Runs-Through-It" mentality of flyfishing for trout....not all trout live in rivers. The region has excellent still water trout fishing opportunities if you take the time to find them.

Poole Creek is the only local stream I've heard of where the trout population survives past one season.

Hi all,

I haven't posted on fishing sites for quite a while now, guess I've been doing my own stuff... But this is really my thing, QUEBEC TROUT.

First of all, I have asked brian Coad about his research, and he said that some of the info (ie locations) can really date back(more than 100yrs). Also some could even be rumours... But in general, it is not too hard to find trout on the qc side if you do your homework. You can even get trout from as close as 30min from ottawa. Theres big and small one, stocked and native... One good lead when your looking for stocked fish, is to check the official list from the past couple of years on the Ministère des ressources naturelles et de la faune website :

-http://www3.mrnf.gouv.qc.ca/faune/peche ... /index.asp

Theses trouts are mainly there for special events... But alot survive, but I doubt they atcually mate.

There's also the reserve faunique papineau-labelle, where I think you can have the best trout fishing in the region. Expect to pay around 15$/day to access. The numbers of lakes in this area is really unbeleivable, they maintain a few main roads and stock a few lakes. I beleive they also transfer fish from lake to lake. You can have a pretty wild experience going after lakes that haven't been visited in a couple of years or stay on the big lakes, your choice. I've never been skunked over there, but had some hard days, but mostly great days. If it just doesn't work on lakes, you can always count on streams for smaller trout.

So all I have to say is buy yourself the backroad mapbook of western quebec, look at it, make a few picks, and try em' out...

If it just doesn't work out for you, you can always find a fishing partner

Green's Creek has trout, depending on the time of year. Access it from the Innes road bridge just west of the detention centre. Salmon too.

Looks like NY state is the place for trout but a long trip for some evening solitude on the water with a tight line after a day's work rules out NY. My new mantra seems to be "Smallies on the Fly" so I can psych myself up for the spring of 2008. I might check out the Kemptville area myself.....after all, a brown trout release in any surroundings is a beautiful thing!

I agree that if you're only looking for a couple hours of fishing after work you're pretty much limited to the local warm water species. Locally there is more than just SM available to be caught on the fly. Don't overlook the walleye, pike, muskie, and carp that are abundant in/around Ottawa. If you're lucky you might even hook into one of the many Browns that are yearly stocked in the Ottawa.

Hi Pat,

Welcome aboard. I am somewhat of a newbie to the board as well. Fly fishing for trout as other have pointed out is hard to come by in Ottawa. I moved here myself from Wyoming, which was trout fishing heaven, 5 years ago and I have been struggling to find good trout waters ever since.

Ottawa has many other species if you don't mind fishing for warmwater species. You will have to travel west to the Algonquin area or Calabogie but it's mainly small lake fishing. Tribs out of the great lakes (Ontario and New York) are you best bets but these are very busy.

I hope you can adapt better than I have to this area. I have often resorted to spin fishing or downrigging for trout in nearby lakes. But I have vowed to try and fly fish more in 2008 and make the best of it!

It must have been quite a shock to move here from Wyoming. Having traveled and fly fished there, I'd move back to Wyoming. I was told out there you could fish a different spot for trout everyday for two lifetimes :D

Hi Salar,

You can say that again :D It was nirvana out there and I was also within 50 minutes of the Colorado boarder so you can imaging the opprotunities! I would also head out for my annual Yellowstone NP trip evey mid-September, absolutely awesome. I caught my first and only grayling there. I could fish alpine creeks and high mountain lakes at 10,000 feet, plains lakes for still water trout and big rivers for trophy trout.

The photo I used for my avatar, was from a trip I made this June to East Newton lake in Cody Wyoming. I spent 4 days in a float tube from 8am to up to 10pm at night and had a blast catching rainbows and browns up to 24 inches and one big broad shouldered 17 inch brookie.

If it wasn't for the fact that I needed to secure better employment and earn more money I would still be there. Oh well, at least I got to spend 5 years there with plenty of memories to show for it.
