what about tippet/leader material. What lb test and do you taper it down or allow the weight of the fly to complete the cast???

There is no finesse when it comes to spring pike. Up until now, I have used a 5-6' length of 10lb test mono and a short wire leader. This season I am going to replace that with a 4 ft piece of 55lb Seaguar fluorocarbon leader material and a small snap. "They" say that pike teeth have a tough time getting through heavy fluoro. We'll see.....

easy flies

Don't get scared by all these guys saying that you should only tie for what your fishing for. It never hurts to have a bunch of different patterns that don't conform to anything in particular.

A good beginner fly is the royal coachman. Contrary to popular belief this pattern works for any type of gamefish (excluding carp, they're just finicky), especially smallmouth bass. Once you get a little more experienced I suggest the Adams Irresistable in brown or olive. This fly is killer for smallmouth, trout, whitefish, perch and pretty much anything else.

The woolly bugger is a great pattern as well. Have fun!
