Got My First One!

I caught my first one with the fly rod on Sunday!

It was just a little 1 to 2 pounder smallmouth but, hey, its a start. He was caught with a black woolie bugger, 5 wt. line. North Beaver Lake (off 41 Hwy) was the water.

Lesson learned: Always have time for a few casts. I was only there for about 20-30 minutes.

Hopefully it is the first of many.

Welcome to the Dark Side, Boatless. There are few things that are as much fun as bass on the fly.

.... the Dark Side.

I've heard that before. I wasn't sure what it was about.

I am beginning to think it has something to do with reaching over three spinning rods for the flies.

The Dark Side is a little self-deprecating joke we flyfishers use to refer to newbies who discover the joys of fly fishing. It's not so much that we choose fly fishing as it is that we become consumed by it.

Many of us are former "bait fishers" (non-flyfishers) who have all but abandoned all other forms of angling. There's just something about catching fish on the fly that is so much more satisfying that it is by any other method.

Anothergone...?What kind of rig did you get and how have you been using it?

If you're interested in learning more about flyfishing, why not join the Ottawa Flyfishers Society?

Ahhh yes Blakeney..... Lots of Smallies eager to take your fly! Not to mention the occasional eye and pike and BIG fallfish. My personal best fallfish is now ~17".
