zee ice is coming!

Post by bobfly »

Played hookey again today and headed for Lower Twin (I'll pay for this by having to work this weekend). Landed 9 including a nice 15 incher along the ice line at the north end. Mmmm good on the bar-b-que. I normally release all but you know, you can't leave one like that for the ice fishermen.

Now you ice fishers be careful out there and don't kill babies. It looks like your friends at MNR have done some fall stocking as some of the 9 were quite small.

And for all of you on the Dark Side: bead head wooley buggers, rust and black. This may be the last week, so get out there if you can. There was a spin caster out there doing all he could to catch one but couldn't. YES!!

I don't think you've got to worry about us lads "Killing the Babies" on lower twin  It's the rest of the Ottawa valley that you'll have to preach too

Hey Monster,

I notice you are from Lanark. I heard that the Lanark Highland club is stocking lakes including Shiner. Who do I contact to join? I want to give that club some $$ if it is going for stocking.

I'm speechless (which is rare) when I see fishers taking home trout 8" or smaller. I mentioned this to the biologist at Pembroke MNR and he said and I am quoting, " 8 inch!, 8 inch! try 4 inches!!". Some guys are just plain pigs. Must be the inbreeding or some other mental deficiency....shades of movie, "Deliverance". I'll stop before I get into more trouble.

Making more friends, eh Bob?

I finally managed to get out today - due to a bad back and a bout of the flu, it was the 1st time since September. I hit Shiner in the tube with my 4-wt. Rigger a tandem of minnow patterns and landed 2 very nice 12" rainbows. It was great! I had the place to myself and only left because I couldn't feel my feet.

There was a ice on the shady side of the lake. I'm not sure I'll get out again this year, so it was a nice way to finish off my fishing season.

I'll definately have to cool it on ice fishers and locals. It has been great swapping weather with the west coast. I was talking to my broker in Vancouver and they've got a foot of snow and here I am Sunday afternoon with my jacket open on Lower Twin, sun out, calm and all to myself. Got 5 on P.T. crayfish and one on B.H. Wooley. The last week of fishing have been the best of the year. I was at Shiner for an hour before noon but noone there was catching so I moved on. I'm in my canoe now (I like to be able to feel my feet while fishing!) You know, we might just get another opportunity this week before freeze up.

hey bud,

Your suggestions are garbage, straight up garbage. Ice fishing has little impact on the lake you post about.

Since you're so keen on suggesting courses of action for ice fishers.... I've got one for you.....try fishing an under used lake.... Shiner and Limestine etc. are so popular its not funny, and fishing from shore isn't going to get you anything but a headache.

Take your ineffective flyfishing rig to a real lake ( not an over used serve all lake) and then you can start talking about the ice -fishing. Bud

Ottawafisher,

Ice-fishing has as much an impact on Shiner as it has on most other lakes. What you & Bobfly probably disagree on is just what that impact constitutes.

As for calling flyfishing ineffective, that's just silly (except on the ice....but we're still figuring out how we can adapt  ). I've been flyfishing for about 10 years now and I've found it to be more effective on speckles, rainbows and browns than I did using spin tackle. As well, it's really killer on bass. To top it all off, I've found it to be more challenging and way more fun than spin fishing.

I'm not sure whether or not you flyfish, but give it a try...it's a blast!
