Hi,

My sister and I are both going to take up fly fishing this year and are looking to join a club to get us up to speed, I see we have missed the meeting, wish i would have heard about this club 2 weeks earlier. I have a few questions however. 1) is there a cost to join 2) if so can we check out a meeting 1st before we pay 3) when is the next meeting? I went to the club website but it has not been updated since last spring. 4) also any feedback from any fish-hawkers about the club would be appriciated.

P.S. We are both in our 20's and looking for some local flyfishers to maybe show us the ropes, or should i say fly lines. I have been doing alot of reading to try and shorten the learning curve for when the ice melts, but i'm sure we would learn more in an hour with an experienced fly fisher then any book can teach us.

Hi Marc,

The next meeting will be March 6th @ 7 PM at the Champlain Fieldhouse. Visitors are always welcome and there is no obligation to join. The cost for new members is $45 and annual renewal is $25.

Meetings begin with general chat followed by official business. We take a short break and then have a presentation by a member or a guest speaker.

On the 3rd Tuesday of each month is fly tying night. There is no cost except if you need to purchase materials from the instructor. (That usually ends up being a couple to five bucks.

Every 2nd Sunday we have casting clinic at the Patro d'Ottawa gym. It's 5 bucks per session. Lots of fun!!!

Your skill level is immaterial...in fact, absolute beginners can learn an awful lot just by getting to know some of the more experienced anglers. You will also learn a lot about locations by joining the new friends you make.

I'll post the announcement of the next meeting a few days before it happens. If you'd like more info, drop me a PM. If you decide to come out, let me know & I'll make it a point to introduce myself and some of the members so you can get to know people.

BTW - our website committee is working on revamping the OFS site. We hope to have it done very soon.

Marc,

As VP of the OFS I can concure with fishboy's comments. Feel free to come out to the next meeting (Mar 6th, 7pm) if you're intersted to check it out prior to joining. The presentation on the 6th will be "Shad on the fly".

The next casting session will be Sunday, Feb 25th @ 10am. We're always happy to help out beginners even if you don't currently have a rod. As for the fly tying, while we used to have a spare vice, the owner picked it up last season, so if you show up without one there might be a slim chance that someone has a spare but I wouldn't necessarily count on it.

Aside from the meetings we (OFS) will also have our regular booth at the Valley Sportsmans Show in Carp in April. We will also be holding our yearly open house in the late spring, but I'm guessing you'd want to be fishing by then like the rest of us? ;-)

Cheers,
Todd
