Adirondack Report

Post by Little Fox »

I fished the Ausable for the first time last weekend (by the ski center) and got skunked. More a reflection on my inexperience than anything else. I stopped by Fran Betters Fly Shop and overheard him telling another customer that the water was low but the fishing was still good.

I also fished my favorite Adirondack pond. I caught a 12" brookie on a hornberg and 2 rainbows (10") on a Mickey Fin.

I'll be back at Ausable to give it another try.

Cheers!

I find that the Ausable is a tough river to fish. It's heavily pressured. You were fishing in the right area though, there is some nice pocket water around the Ski Area.

Give the Salmon River a try sometime. I find that there is a lot less fishing pressure. I've been skunked on the Ausable but so far haven't been skunked on the Salmon.

Cheers,

Salar.

Are you refering to the section of the Salmon that runs through/near Pulaski, NY? Is there a good steelhead run there? Thanks.

Hi Woolly Bugger,

I was referring to what is known as the "other salmon river" near Malone. It's heavily stocked with both brown and rainbow trout. Here a link to maps of the river:

The Salmon River at Pulaski does have good steelhead, salmon, and brown trout runs. From what I hear, it's very busy especially during the fall salmon runs.

Cheers,

Hi Salar,

Great, thank you for the link :D It looks like this "Salmon river" would be a little closer to Ottawa. I will see if I can give this a try next year.

Cheers,

Stephan
