Hi Everyone,
I fished the Salmon River this morning for about 2 1/2 hours. Conditions were excellent with the weather being partly cloudy and relatively warm. The water level has come up with recent rains. I was unable to cross the river easily in my usual spots. The additional water has created some good holding water in places that haven't held fish since the early season. There weren't any hatches to speak of. I only saw one rise.
In the end I landed three rainbows and two browns (10-12" range). I had a few others on but lost them. I caught all but one of the trout on a #12 Breadcrust Nymph. The other one I landed on a #8 Olive Woolly bugger.
Here's one of the larger bows I landed:

All in all it was a great trip to end my trout season. This was the first time I've fished in NY in October. If anyone is thinking of heading down, you've got till the 15th (Monday) before the season closes.
Cheers,
Salar

I was actually down there for three days doing some camping. Spent most of my time driving the back roads scouting new locations to fish next season. It poured rain on Thursday and Friday (hence the river levels being higher). Tried a couple new areas that looked promising but only landed a couple of trout and a lot of chub. Caught one chub 12"+. I didn't know they got that big.
In the end, on Saturday morning I returned to my favorite place to fish and had more success. It was worth doing some scouting though since most of the time we tend to fish areas that we're comfortable / familiar with. There could be better places just around the corner.

Thanks GrandRiverReaper.
An olive woolly bugger tied with red thread and a gold bead is dynamite on the Salmon River.
I was using a 9' 5wt Sage FLI. It's a good all around trout rod. An 8' or 8'6 4wt would be better sized for the majority of the trout you catch there but I like the 9' length for nymphing and it also allows me to cast small / medium sized streamers.

Thanks for the report Salar. Nice pretty rainbows. If all goes as planned I'm heading down to the extended season section of the ausable next weekend. It will be nice to practice some czech nymphing and fish for trout one last time this year. I cannot believe I havent been to New York this year...it's by far my favourite place to fish within driving distance of Ottawa by far.
