Fly-Fishing Jamaica?

Hello,

Anyone have any info on Jamaica fly-fishing guides? Best case scenario I find one and hook up with him but if not I'll figure it out on my own. And by figure it out I mean try, maybe get one or two fish, and a sunburn, and hopefully not touch anything that results in me peeing on myself.

Thanks guys, any information at all would be helpful. I realize Jamaica isn't world renown for its amazing bonefish or permit flats but I'm sure there's something floating in there that will put my VT2 to the test.

Hi Pescatore1986,

First off, congratulations on choosing Jamaica. If you haven't been, you probably won't want to do much fishing. The scuba/snorkling diving in the coral reef is just as good and might be offered for free depending on where you're staying. Where will you be staying in Jamaica?

When I stayed in Ocho Rios in 2004 (after the big hurricane) I'd usually stay on the resort when not golfing. There is a major tourist trap in nearly every major city within each parish you go to. So if you're looking for a guide I'd suggest asking some hotel staff or going to some of the tourist websites. Another thing you might be interested in if you're really hoping to get in some fishing is to take the motor boat 'guide' that will (without fail) be circling around in front of your beach's resort. He will probably troll out in and around the beach you stay at and it's usually about an hour of time for minimal cash. You can probably take your fly rod out with you and get some great action depending on the water clarity. When I was scuba diving I had about 20% clarity, which is pretty much see through! Take an underwater camera and snap some fish photos when scuba diving or snorkling, and it's as good (if not better) as fishing. But still, I bet a clouser minnow would work sweet there.

I'll ask some people (from Jamaica) from work if they know anyone and will get back to you. Let us know how you make out. I doubt you'll want to do much fishing in Jamaica.....It's paradise! Try the Appleton and Red Stripe....It's paradise!

Best fishes and keep it real,

GRR

Thanks for the reply!

Ya, I figure I won't be doing MUCH fishing if any but i'll bring the rod just in case. It's the first "down-south" trip with the family -- as opposed to my Cancun excusion a few years back-- so time will probably be split between the beach, ocean, and teaching my sister how to drink.

But if I do manage to get out on the water and hook a snook or what have you I'll post a follow-up. We'll be staying at the Sunset Jamaica Grande Resort in Montego Bay. Definitely looking forward to it and I'll also take your advice on the Appleton (and maybe the Clousers too but, like you said, who really cares when you're in the Carribean).

Cheers
