As winter is starting to take hold and we are forced to put the fly rod away (except for ice fishing or if you travel south:D ) other piscatorial pursuits are taken up. There is fly tying to fill up all our boxes and try to tie some new patterns but are any of you going to build a new fly rod this winter?
I have all the compenents in hand to build a new Scott 8wt 9ft 5 piece rod for salmon/pike/muskie and saltwater species. I am looking forward to getting this 5 piece rod completed as it will be much easier to travel with.
What are you all building?

Not this winter, but one of these years after I pick up the necessary hardware and setup the necessary workshop in my house. LOL
I know of a couple of the OFS members that have build rods in the past but I'm not sure if any of them have any plans for rods this season.

I personally haven't built a rod or plan to in the near future but last year the Algonkin Fly Fishers club held two rod building sessions over the winter. A good resource was the
rod building forum website.

I just remembered another good reference for building a rod. Here's a link to a guide for building rods:

If you don't have a drying wheel yet, one of our club members came up with a simple/cheap solution using an inexpensive electric barbeque rotisserie. Just add a piece of pipe insulation foam and your rod butt fits nice and snug.

Salar, thanks for the links. Getting into rod building is not very expensive. I have made all of my wooden rod stands and thread tensioner (from a slightly modified cheap fly tying bobbin). I bought a very small 6rpm motor from Cabelas several years ago which I build into a wooden stand. If you can tie flies then you can build rods. I have built 4 of them so far and I about to start my 5th one. I am always on the look out for a really good price on the blank, often they are on sale at the end of the season before new models come out.
The Scott SAS I am about to build is a grey blank and I am putting blue guides and black and metalic blue thread wraps.
I am sure you would probably both enjoy building your own rods if you got into it.
