Hi Everyone,

Has anyone ever used dragon fly nymph patterns for trout in lakes? I was watching the New Fly Fisher a few weeks ago and it was said that dragon fly nymphs are productive throughout the season and at times more productive than leech patterns. I was on a fly fishing trip in Quebec this spring and the brook trout were full of them. Any recommendations on patterns to tie?

Hello Salar,

I have used dragonfly patterns for rainbows in lakes, and have had some success. I used them at lost lake in whistler and it worked for the rainbows, and caught some trout using a dragonfly nymph as the middle fly with a team of leeches. I used a hand-twist because they move in a constant motion. To be honest I have had much more success using boobies, blobs and small chartreuse and black leech patterns for stocked trout.

I looked through my library here and in "Tying Nymphs" 2nd ed. by Randall Kaufmann there is one dragon fly nymph that should do the trick. (I haven't tied this myself but I think I will add it to my winters tying list )

Salar,

One of the OFS members fishes them often up in Calabogie. The trick (I'm told) is to crawl them right on the bottom with a full sink line. Bob Sheedy's book on stillwater fly patterns has a number of good dragon/Damsel fly nymph patterns.
