Hi, everyone.

I'm curious if anybody's been to upper New York state yet this year, and what the conditions are like? Specifically, I'm interested in trout in the Adirondacks rather than salmon near Pulaski or the lake Champlain tributaries. Last year, I got out a few times in early spring, but the snow was still thawing making the larger rivers difficult to fish. Some here suggested waiting until early May when the DEC stocks the rivers. My hope was to get out and maybe try some smaller streams or ponds this year, earlier in the season. Anyone have insight into the conditions or suggestions where to try my luck?

Try the Marble River near town of Chateaugay if you're looking for stable flows. It's spring fed and has naturally reproducing trout. It's not easy to fish by any means (bring a 7'6" rod) but the flows should be manageable.

Are there any special considerations accessing the river? I see PFR (on the DEC site) off of route 374, but my experience locating sections of PFR on some rivers has been.. well.. sketchy. Things are often unmarked and I've been hesitant to just go trodding off into someone's field just because my map says it's okay.

Easy access can be found at the State Fish Hatchery. You can park there but make sure to leave before they close the gates. Also, if you've been fishing the river, don't got near their holding takes with your fishing gear. Whirling disease is supposed to be present in the river and they don't want to contaminate their stocks.

I usually have just fished the Marble by finding a road crossing and fishing upstream and downstream. I have found that the public fishing rights maps to be somewhat inaccurate. If there aren't any posted signs I'll fish it. Make sure to check the fine print on the posted signs too. Landowners will sometimes post it off limits to hunting but not fishing.
