Rio Gold Fly Line

Post by Salar »

Hi Everyone,

I finally decided to replace my floating line after 6 years of use. I picked up a new Rio Gold WF floating line from Float Paddle & Fly. I tested the line out this weekend at Lake Clear. My first impressions were that the line is super slick. It shot out through the guides well and was easy to strip. I was impressed at the way it cast. It was easy to cast at longer distances with nice tight loops. I'll give a more in depth report later in the season as I try out the line in more conditions. I'm looking forward to trying it sometime soon in New York. The real test for me will be to see how it roll casts with dry flies. My previous line wouldn't roll cast very well at all. Since I use my 5wt for most everything I'm hoping that this will be an excellent all around / all purpose fly line.

Cheers,

Salar.

As a matter of curiosity, what is your main 5-weight rod these days?

[I very nearly went to Upstate New York today but eventually decided to wait a or two.]

I've had a chance to dry fly fish with this line a couple times now. It casts very well with nice tight loops and is accurate. Even though it's a weight forward line, the extra long belly allow you to easily roll cast. It's a great all-purpose line.

Salar,

What line were you fishing with before switching over to the Rio? I'm getting used to the SA GPX on my 4wt and 5wt rods...having previously cast with the Orvis Wonderline 3 and the AirFlo RidgeLine.

The Orvis is pretty nice, but at close to the 100$ mark, a little expensive for my everyday use. The AirFlo RidgeLine I don't find casts all that well and doesn't roll-cast worth a darn either. Just my opinion, of course.

Cheers,

Jean

Before the Rio Gold I was using a Scientific Angler Ultra 4. If you want to test cast the Rio I believe that Float Paddle and Fly has one spooled up to test cast.

Thanks Paul,

I'll take a run out to FP&F at lunch tomorrow and have a look-see. I've been joking with Greg that I should just leave my credit card at the store to make things easier and save time ;)

I use the airflo ridge line and swear by it. It's the best line i've used, casts nice, in any cast.
