Well here I am in the middle of the Rideau fishing the big hole near the dam at Long Island when I spot this little fella struggling to swim across the river. At first I'm thinking "another mink" which you'll see occasionally, however the head and ears didn't look right. As he got closer it was like "What the...#*@$".

This was the first time I've ever seen a squirel in the water swimming. And for the record they don't swim very well. The little fella was lucky to get across given that there is the odd muskie that can be found in this particular stretch water. I'm sure he looked like a pretty good morsel with that tail flowing in the water.

One day here in the 1000 Islands I was fishing just west of Gananoque Narrows by Squaw Island. Anyone who knows the area realizes it is a one of the busiests places on the river on a summer day. Tour boats, cruisers, high powered off shore cigerette boats all whizzed by on this day. Jostling in the waves I was ready to say enough when as I pulled away I saw a little speck a ways off that looked like it was moving. I did not know it was a squirrel until it crawled up onto a rock on Squaw. The only logical place it could have come from was Gordon Island which was over 1/2 mile to the north. That squirrel ran an impossible gauntlet of huge boats, wakes and strong curents to make it. The odds were impossile. It was so tired it literally collapsed on the rock and did not attempt to move as I approached. I stayed with it for about 20 minutes before he crawled off into the brush.
