Gotta love flyfishing for crappie..with a floating line the flies all stay nicely suspended. I normally fish a short leader with three different flies. When they're schooled up tight it allows for lots of doubles and the occasional triple. I normally fish a team of three woolly buggers without the hackle in size 8-6, I like to keep off the sunfish. If theyre a bit deeper I put one with a bead or chain eyes on the point. I normally use pink, white, and chartreuse. I found a pond close to university with crappie and I'm looking forward for all the ice to come off so it can start warming up

Last spring I was nailing crappies with a crystal purple scud in a size 8 or so. Wouldn't have thought crappies ate scuds but who cares. They seemed to only be on the scuds for a week or so and then they were gone.

I tied up half a dozen crystal scuds for Joco tonight and thought I'd share them. I was always taught as a kid that crappies only eat minnows but for whatever reason, last year I slammed them on practically every cast. No idea why. Anyways, here's a pic of the crystal scud as well as a new stone clinger nymph.

Recipe: no-lead wire, cyrstal flash, light wire, scud back, crystal chenille.





While sampling last year it was really noticeable how creamy they were on the underside so I've tried to mimic that in this nymph.


Anybody else have crappie-savvy flies?

Those are pretty good looking crappie flies in both posts. The scuds and stone would work really well on trout, while the weighted flies would probably work well on bass in the Rideau and the Ottawa. I like the one with the dumbells - might be a pattern to try on carp. What sizes are the weighted flies?

The size on the coneheads and purple weird thing are size 6 tied on a 3x streamer hook.

Like Mike said, hopefully that is big enough to keep off smaller sunfish. We'll see. If I were to tie up some more, I'd leave off the dumbbell eyes and use bead chain. If the crappies are sluggish then the dumbbell eyes would sink too fast taking the fly out of the strike zone. I'd try to tie it with more neutral buoyancy.

Those look great, especially the red and white one. I don't take temperature readings, but there is a certain time every spring when I catch crappies and the bluegills are not yet biting. I always go small at this time, as it seems to catch me more, those scuds are perfect. Normally around early-mid may when the sunfish are getting agressive i bust out the bigger flies so i dont have the little sunnies swallowing the hook.

Joco- I am trying not to go fishing, but with this weather it is hard. I went last weekend and the pike were stacked up spawing in a creek. It was technically legal to fish for them, but it wouldnt have felt right so I was a spectator instead. Im coming back to ottawa tommorow and plan on checking out the NY streams for resident trout or heading for steelhead on friday . Done exams april 21st, right before trout opens

Hey, no problem. Let me know which ones work and I can send you a few more if you lose any. Plus I'm getting some new flytying stuff next week so I'll be experimenting with some more streamers.
