Keep in mind that many so called "free" sites are simply looking for email addresses. When signing up to questionable sites, it's always a good idea to use a disposable email address in the event that you start to receive spam. In this way you can simply kill that email address and you will also know which site was responsible, assuming you set up different disposable email addresses for each site you register with.
