Hi guys ... I'm hoping to be in the market for a boat this fall or next spring ... depends on when I have cash available. Anyway I really like fly fishing but also like to use spinning tackle, etc. I am looking for a simple boat with an outboard engine. So in looking for a boat is there anything in particular I should look for to ensure I can easily fly fish? It seems to me that stability is essential but does that mean more of a flatbottom vs. V hull boat? I have been in lots of boats but haven't really given too much though about what I was sitting on except if there were fish below it ... any advice is greatly appreciated.

Basically just try to minimize anything on the deck that might tangle any fly line that's laying on the deck or sides. You'd think that a bass boat would be pretty much free of hang ups but you'd be surprise how many little things there are that can catch your line... the little loop straps on the lids for the live wells, etc.

The same goes for kayaks if you ever look into using them for fly fishing.

When I don't feel like putting the bassboat in the water, I chuck flies from my old 14' V-hull tinny and it works well enough. Just keep the area around your feet clear and that way the line will only get caught on the seat, trolling motor handle and the tiller motor handle

One of these days I'll be replacing the old tinny and I'll probably go with a 14' jon boat. I think a jon boat would be great to fly fish from.

I just started out fly fishn a few years ago so Im far from being an expert but I would recommend a 12 foot jon/duck boat.

I have one and you can easily stand in it, even off center no prob. Lots of flat floor space and a small outboard or electric will do fine.

Ordered my tracker through Georges Marine for around $700 brand new.

I'm hoping to get a boat within the year as well, was thinking a jon boat also. anyone know how shallow they go? on average, i know it depends on the weight in the boat.

Pretty shallow. I often stumble across duck hunters sitting in camo'd jon boats in a foot of water.

how bout not so calm waters, say a bit of a roll? i know they make a "v" hull type jon boat, know much about those?

A 12'-14' jon boat can take some chop but with the low sides I'd be expecting to get wet.

Never seen a "V" hull jon boat.

It is called Modified V Jon Boat.







They are a nice compromise for the stability of a Jon and the ability to take some tougher waves of a V boat.

OK. I've seen those but didn't really pay much attention to the "V".

What brand is that 1st picture? That would be an ideal tub to flyfish out of.

If your fishn smaller water a 12' jon boat would be fine. Larger water something with a V haul will handle alot better.

If your fishn back lakes keep in mind a 14' mod v tracker is 408lbs were as a 12' jon is 87lbs and a 10' 77lbs.
