Help identifying old Johnson outboard

Post by vfgilber »

Hi,

I am in need of help identifying the Johnson outboard I just bought.

I've done my best with all the links I've found online, but the model number on the plate doesn't match any of the lists.

The only identification plate I can find is on the transom mounting clamp. It specifies model number FD-16A.

As I said, this number doesn't appear on any model listing, pre or post 1980.

Can someone help?

It is covered in my Seloc Repair Manual.
It is a 1962, 18 hp motor. I have a 1967, 40 hp motor.
As for replacement parts don't overlook your local UAP/NAPA dealer. Ask to see thier marine catalouge. For you motor they list tune-up kits, coils, carb kits, impellers, thermostats, needle bearings, head gaskets, starter pawls & gearhouse seal kits. My local dealer saves me his old catalogue when the new one comes in. These are order in parts that can take from 1 day to 3 weeks to arrive. If they must come out of the US wharehouse expect close to the 3 weeks. Generally quite good prices.

Hope this helps: Rick
