Safety inspections on the water...
Safety inspections on the water...
Has anyone else had to deal with these safety inspections in Ont.? I'm from Qc. and have actually had 2 safety inspections done by police on the water...(this is very anti-productive when fishing!)
Just wondering if it is happening in Ont. as well.
Cheers,
Greg

I've dealt with "safety" inspections since I can remember...used to be OPP out here on this stretch of the river and they were always great reasonable, knowledgeable, community officers
...now we have to deal with the Ottawa Police marine unit which is a total crock of.%#$&*().....
CARLETON COUNTY....YES

CARLETON COUNTY....YES
Ahh so not just me...
I have a solution now ->Shallow Water..I head for it when I see their boat out patrolling!
We should get a compliance sticker or something...once passed.
(Especially if you have young kids that love to play with flashlights/whistles etc.)
Lets hope for normal water levels this year!

Not too sure what to say about this, but I need to say something!!
I just read about the kayaker, weak swimmer, no PFD, and I think we all agreed that was a tragic event and sympathise with the family.
What if we had mandatory inspection to make sure that everyone has a PFD. Hmmmm!
Maybe we could legislate that people wear their PFD, just like a vehicle seatbelt. Hmmm!
Maybe next time my motor breaks down and the wind is blowing me to a rocky shoreline and it's coming on for dark, I'd be wishing I had a flashlight, an anchor, a whistle a bailer, a paddle, because then I wouldn't be ruining the fishing of the next boat passing who (must by law) come to rescue me.
It's too easy not to have the correct safety equipment onboard, and its a great thing to buy the kids a flashlight and whistle of their own.
This equipment is designed to save your life and your kids lives. They are not toys.
It seems obvious that boaters can't be trusted to have the correct safety equipment so inspections are made.
It's the Gov't doing their best to protect us from ourselves.
Until we can all smarten up, thanks Gov't.
Not meant to be rude or biased, just my point of view!
Enjoy the water and be safe.

Safety checks are great Terry...I'm not arguing that at all...what I have a problem with is the fact that I have been pulled over numerous times during a single weekend by the Ottawa Police Marine unit which I think is ridiculous....we were actually stopped twice by the same unit within the same day!!!
As soon as I posed the statement "you stopped us 4 hrs ago", the officer said ....ok, i do remember you now...have a nice day!!!...they can at least mark the boat registration numbers down once they've pulled you over and then use that during the same day as a cross reference so that they don't pull you over numerous times....
The other thing I have to laugh about is the use of common sense from these Marine Officers
Do you know how many times I've laughed at these guys when they have asked me to show my bailing can on my Pontoon Boat???
....I always give then the same response...."what am i supposed to do with that other than to use it to take a pi$$??...There's nothin to bail out!!!....

Right on Steve.
I agree that twice in the same day is a little over the top and a simple record of boat numbers would cover that.
BTW, if you get asked for a bailer or bail bucket again, refer them to page 46 of the safe boating guide, its not required for multi-hulled vessels.
Check it out at www.boatingsafety.gc.ca. I do think that the officers should know that.
It just bothered me reading the post about the kayaker and then seeing this post complaining about safety checks, especially the part about the children playing with the safety equipment.
Sorry if I misunderstood, but if it comes down to interupted fishing or saving someones life (or helping them to save their own life) it's a small price to pay.

well said gents....and great discussion. I can't count the number of times over the years that i have "interupted" my fishing day to help out a fellow boater. on a few occasions it may even have prevented a possible tragedy. I always have the required equipment on board and i will ALWAYS (even if it was the best day of my life fishing) come to someone elses need if required

Thanks a lot Terry!!!!....I printed that page and will keep it in my tackle box...The 2 officers that stopped us last year did not know that!!....they just told me that i had a water vessel and rules are rules....Terry_F wrote:Right on Steve.

SAFETY'S FOR BOATS

It annoys me to help another boater out when they don't take the proper PRECAUTIONS before going out in their boats ......BUT THE MOST GLARING problem I am seeing these days are boats that SHOULD NOT BE ON THE WATER....Take a poll and see how many boats out there leak and still get used, or the owner has an issue with the motor and they still use the boat until it quits,,, better yet the boats with consoles and steering cables older than ten years most are starting to seize, or the aircraft cable steering systems which don't met to-days standards...I have in the past years pulled more than a dozen boats off the water for all sorts of motor problems and when you look at the boat later one can see that it shouldn't have been used until it was fixed properly....Also there are some dealers out there that just don't know how to set a boat up to do 60mph plus and also teach the owner to drive the boat properly, got one in the shop now....
So be warned that the times they are a changin and the time has come for more regulation.........

Heres a thought and it would save the police money,,,, man the launch ramps and get the boaters before they launch and then give them a sticker, it's my view that most PRO-ACTIVE boaters always have the saftey equipment all the time so a sticker would let the police know this guy understands the saftey issue and we won't bohter you....Also guys that are doing charters have to have the proper equipment and they don't need to be harrassed......Did I mention the quota they have to stop so many boats in a day........ I worked on their boats and talked to the supervisors and most police officers that man the marine unit are not that savvy

If you looked in most boats I would hazzard a geuss that more than 50 % don't have proper safety equipment so we all pay the price through hearing of tragedies and being arbitrairily stopped on the water...GET YOUR FELLOW BOATERS TO TOW THE LINE and we won't need these inspections.........

Guys I have been stopped SEVEN GD times this year on the St.Larry. One day believe it or I was stopped for going too fast????? and two hours later another safety inspection by the same officers! (no charges) I am all for safe boating but I am SICK and TIRED of being harrassed, and to me this is nothing short of harrassment. Same officers EVERY time!
My suggestion would be a sticker that you are awarded after passing the inspection.
Down my way what is a bigger concern? Me with a dead flashlight or a smuggler running a 18ft Jon boat with a 250hp OB hangin of the back? Are our tax dollars being well spent?
BTW I was told that the police can not tow a crippled boat back to port you have to contact a search a rescue team. True?

They used to have a sticker program (a few years ago). We got stopped, had everything in perfect order and they gave us a sticker for the boat. They said, next time you're stopped show the sticker and you likely won't get searched - sticker was good for the season. No guarantees but worth a try. They told us that the reasoning is once the safety equipment is on board, the boats stay in compliance. Its the people who forget to put the lifejackets, fire extinguisher etc back in to the boat after the winter. I just leave it all in the boat all the time so i'm always good. I haven't seen the sticker program since.
I used to get stopped more often. So far this year only once and it was painless. Police boat comes over, they can see in plain view all the equipment I needed (and I had everything). 15 seconds tops.
I've also had them come up to me and the guys says, oh, we searched this guy earlier (they hadn't) and then they take off. Lots of princecrafts around I guess.
My son did get an OPP lure a few years ago when he was very young and it made his day... it's still a key part of his tacklebox. He thinks it's pretty cool to have police issue fishing tackle
