Chartplotter/sonar question

Post by Joey Rat »

I have an Lowrance X67 sonar and a Lowrance iFinderH20C gps mounted beside it on the dash of my boat.

I've been thinking about upgrading to a chartplotter but it occurs to me that unless I am prepared to spend a substantial amount I would simply be replicating in one unit what I currently have in two.

The other option would be to simply upgrade the sonar, move the X67 to the front of the boat (which I would like to do anyway) and keep the separate gps. Or conversely just mount the new finder on the front.

Is there a chartplotter in the $800 - $1,000 range that would give me substantially better performance than what I have now or is the sonar upgrade the way to go?

Any thoughts on this?

I have exactly the same configuration but with an X67C and H2O.
I plan to upgrade to something like an LCX-37C 8"screen, (7" depending on the money).
My X67C and H2O on a RAM mount will move to the front of the boat once I do this with the transducer mounted on the trolling motor.

I love the config I have, but would like a bigger screen and as I spend lots of time up front, I want electronics up there too.

As for performance, in my opinion they all perform in a similar way, you pay the extra bucks for the features, more waypoints, bigger screen, colour, compatability with other equipment etc.

Hope this helps.

Joey: You can get into a Humminbird 787c combo (my choice) or a Lowrance 520c for the budget you have indicated. Both have all the bells and whistles other than side imaging and have proven to be reliable units. I stock the Humminbirds and can get the Lowrance units

Terry, I had a look at that LCX 37C. Nice unit but a little out of my price range. My wife would definately notice that purchase.

Mine too, I've already started negotiations as that will be a "next year" upgrade.
