Yamaha is the way to go i have a 90 fourstroke fished 12.5 hours at quinte putting 35miles on the water and cost me 25$ in gas. No smoke while trolling no noise. So changing the oil once a year isn`t a big deal, i like getting my hand dirty once in a while anyways!!!
BTW yamaha is the biggest outboard manufacturer in the world!
Go anywhere where people fish serious saltwater you`ll see 95% of motors are Yamaha. every marina i1ve seen in florida everybody runs yamaha.
I didn't vote, I don't really have much experience with either engines.
I have an '85 Johnson 15 and a 96 Johnson 115 that I both bought new at the time and I am the only owner.
I haven't really had any problems at all with them and I've got tons of hours on them. Waterskiing, tubing, anchor/boat/dock towing etc... lots of use. They've suffered lots of collisions with sandbars, rockpiles and logs.
Had to buy about 8-10 new props but thats all I've had to do to them except for normal maintenance stuff. So really, I couldn't be happier with these engines. I do the normal year-end maintenance and leave then outdoors mostly.
So is Johnson the best? I doubt it... They're probably all about the same. For sure my older engines won't have as good mileage as the newer engines but that's okay.
