25 4strk Merc big foot starting problem

Hey you geniuses, I've got a 9-10 year old 4stroke merc big foot that year after year gets harder and harder to get started. i have to take the lid off, push on the side of hinge thingy at the motor to get it started now.

some sort of trouble with the start in gear protection???

HELP :?:

also, she's runnin' a little hot ... maybe I just notice as the lids off to get her started, but she seems hot. any ideas.
