1975 Johnson 6hp problem

Post by plncrzy »

Motor starts very well, idles great etc. as soon as I put it under load the engine "sounds" like it lacks power and begins to miss/run rough.

Inspection of fuel system is "clean".
removed flywheel to replace condensors and points and noticed that both coils were cracked in mutiple locations.

I am correct to assume that thte coils are my problem?

From my experience, as anecdotal as it may be... condenser problems are often mistaken for carb problems, carb problems are mistaken for condenser problems.

What you described... to me anyway... sounds like classic condenser problems!

Does the 6hp have coils too? While you have the fly wheel off... change the spark plug wires too... (Might as well!)

coils

Replace the coils they are shorting to ground, you are seeing the insulation crack and it lets the juice go to ground instead of to the spark plugs. have them in stock 35.00 a piece replace both

Sorry Craig but it's not the condensor if the coils have cracks in the insulation

I tend to agree and $35 a piece is a good price. I paid that 10 yrs ago for mine. 8)

Thanks for that,

I discovered that last evening, I replaced the condensors and points with no effect whatsoever.

Guess Ill drive over to Franktown with my kids today and introduce myself to MR. MLS :)
BTW... I hear that these older 6hp Johnson were an awesome motor an definately woth keeping.

 Just a thought... could I not squeeze some GOOP into the cracks and salvage the coils?

no matter what you do to the coils, they will soon need to be changed. after you change them you will wonder why you hadn't done it sooner. i think the 6hp johnson/evinrude motors were great motors and you will never find anyone to disagree
