Mercury clear vinyl oil injection lines

Post by SeaMonster »

I replaced my leaking oil pump. ('94 60 HP 3 cyl). Should have gotten the oil lines at the same time as the pump, but of course hindsight is 20/20.

I used standard HW store vinyl chemical resistant tubing in a pinch since I didn't want to reuse the old ones. (I need to go FISHING!!!!!!) They look the same, and pretty much felt the same in terms of wall thckness and firmness.

Will that work for a short period until I can get back to the dealer to swap in the OEM tubes? Or am I asking for a blowup in short order?

It's only 2 psi on the line from the pump to the fuel line, and just gravity fed on the inlet. I don't see it as being an issue for the short term. Just wondered if anyone has used the same.

P.S
I don't have any Merc dealer anywhere close to where I am. I assume any outboard dealer would sell the fuel/oil tubing in lengths?

there should be a marking on the tube. It should have the letters "ASTM" and then a code. I would call a Merc dealer and ask them for the code on the tube that they sell. if they are the same then drive on without any worries. but if you want piece of mind, buying the more expensive Merc tubing should put your mind at ease.

You shouldn't have any problems with the oil line in question

I sure hope you are familiar with bleeding that system, or you won't have time to worry about the lines. Major cause of grenading.

yeppers.
pump and lines bled fine.
Also pre-mixed the tank 50:1 to boot. Just like the shop manual says :)
kept running 50:1 until the tank was empty and I could see the oil tank was lowering.

I'm going to swap the lines to tygon, just to be safe but so far it's been ok.
