9.9 Honda servicing
9.9 Honda servicing
I am about to winterize my 2004 9.9 and need some advice. I bought a new oil filter to replace the one in the motor. The location of the oil filter is not obvious. Where is the darn thing? Any tips about replacing the filter would be appreciated too.
One more thing. I may re-paint my aluminum boat next spring. Thinking about going from red to blue. Any advice on that score? Brand of paint? Primer first?
Thanks everybody.

The Owners Manual recommends the oil filter be changed every year, so ya, the 9.9 has one. I'd like to think the Honda dealer who sold me the filter knew the 9.9 has an oil filter too. My owners manual covers several models of the 8 HP motor. Both of them have oil filters that need to be replaced. So.....are you sure your motor does not?

Positive, and no mention anywhere in the manual of a filter.
Possibly there was a change in design at some point.
I would take it to the dealer and just have them show you and maybe they'll have some tips on easiest way to change it, I've seen some filter placements that you need about 6 elbows and tiny hands just to get to them.

Here is the 2004 owner's manual (US model)...how different could it be?

P.72
The 2001 manual shows the same filter.. so not really sure.. can't believe US/CAN models would be that different... but stranger things have happened...

P.57
Hope you find it!

Thank you SeaMonster. Even though I purchased my 9.9 in April 2004 it appears I have the 2003 model. The 03 owners manual does not show the same degree of detail as the 04 version. Years ago I used to live in your neck of the woods on Prince Edward Ave a few blocks north of Belmont. Thanks for taking the time to help me out with this.
Fish Hunter. I highly recommend that you go to the marine.honda.com website and select the owners manual using the serial number on your motor. That way you can determine with certainty if your motor has an oil filter that, by now, is possibly way overdue for replacement. I just can't imagine a 4 stroke motor that size without an oil filter.

I don't even think Honda has ever made a 2 stoke outboard... at least not in a very long time. But I've never seen one.
Survey says...:

The honda marine canada site is crap and doesn't have manuals, so I'm hoping the US manuals are at least for the same outboard. They're all made in the that same place in Japan.
Same as the others, it's the same setup all along.
If you haven't done so already, according to the manual, Take off the upper cover, then remove the 6 screws for the lower cover, take it off, and it should be there. Post a pic with all that off if you want so we can take a look-see.

Alright, heres the scoop.
I did some online research and apparently I was misinformed on the year.
It was bought new in 2000 but is actually a 1997 model. I'm not the original owner.
There is no oil filter so to speak. The only oil filter persay is located in the oil pan on the end of the pick up tube. It is pretty much just a screen and is nearly impossible to change without pulling the powerhead.
Sorry for the confusion and hopefully this clears things up.
