Also should think about heat. My iPAD overheated last year with a black case in direct sun. The big yellow "I'm dying from heat" triangle that Apple displays before the device shuts down was not helpful in navigation ;)

I put a Tilley style hat over it and have not had an issue since. It also helps with visibility.

Also a version is available for android phones for about $15.
As stated earlier no data connection is required as long as you downloaded the maps.
Last year between Christmas and New Years I downloaded the app as we drove through Toronto on route to Temagami. Used it ice fishing where I had no signal without any problems.

darkelf wrote:that is so sweet. i looked at a handhelp and the nav chip last year just for ice fishing and i just couldn't justify it. believe it or not, i don't own a cell phone.....but i'm seriously considering it now. did you get the maps at lebarons or somewhere else and is there anything else involved?
You don't need a phone. The app is available for iPhones, iPads or Android phones and tablets. You don't even need a constant data connection, just download the maps over WIFI and you're good to go. Oh yeah, the phone/tablet would need a decent GPS chip in it.

I've used it on my phones, and both tablets (Asus Transformer and 7" Galaxy Tab). To be honest I prefer the 7" Galaxy Tab because its small enough for me to put somewhere shaded so I can see the screen well, and big enough to read easily.

If memory servers it was about $15 for the standard app and $50 for the HD version, not that there's any practical difference between the two.

I've had this app for two years now. I LOVE it. Before I head out to a new lake I'm able to check it out at home from the comfort of my lazyboy and drop my pins where I want to go. Day of, I have a much better idea where to start out then trying to play around with the sonar unit at the docks wasting valuable time on the water. At the low price of this app it almost justifies buying a new toy just for the navigation abilities. Only warning I have about it is make sure you fully close the app when you are not using it unless you really want to track your movements as it really runs down your battery pretty quickly.

Yeah, none of the phones/tablets I've tried are any good in daylight at all. I just broke down and bought the chip.

When I had read your post I wasn't really interested because I did not fish those particular water, but the wife and I where down again in Long Sault, ON today and Tony from CCC showed me his navionics app on his cell to show me the water depth of the SL river around the islands, which enables you to strategise where to fish for carp.

Once home I bought the app, and it is now on my iPhone.

Great app. Difficult to navigate inside that app. Will have to press button icons and see what I can learn. Is there an instruction section that be used to help a newby?
