I did pump in new lower end oil for the winter.
Think I did it now....Couple of odds & ends.....
Crash....Milky oil = seal issues in the lower unit. Your diagnosis is right. The unit should be pressure tested and the seals changed to prevent the water from getting into the lower unit gear case. Oil mixed with water causes the oils lubrification qualities to break down resulting in a burnt LU. Get those seals changes before you have to go shopping for a lower unit....seals are MUCH cheaper 
P.S. Are my eyes playing tricks on me or are you also missing a part of the skeg too?? If so, the bang that broke the skeg may also have done in a seal as well.

.....it could possibly be the nylon "o" rings that are behind the filler caps as well, (....if you're lucky.....)
For the cost, .....$2.00 bucks or so, ...I always replace 'em.....
As far as seals go, .....you might try storing it with the prop off over winter, ....and vertical of course, .....you might see some tell tale leakage around the shaft over time.....
I've never done seals myself, ....I'll look in the manual and see what's involved.....

Just reading this thread has been amazing. Thats some good work you did there, all most inspiring me to take on a similar project.

After browsing through the manual at lunch today...., I have come up with a step by step procedure for replacing the lower end seals, .....
This procedure may be "safely" applied to any outboard, ....regardless of make or model.....
I have tried to simplify this as much as possible, .....
step 1)
Get in and start your vehicle......
step 2)
Align the vehicle hitch, ...directly underneath the front of your trailer......
step 3)
Carefully lower the trailer until such time, ......as the ball of your vehicle hitch, ....engages fully with the receptacle on the trailer, .....
step 4)
Lock everything down, ...connect lights, chains, ...etc, ...and make a visual inspection, ....before proceeding to the next step......
step 5)
get back into vehicle and start it up.....
step 6)
Check your map, .....and drive, ...."safely", ...to the nearest marina, ...............
That has someone who knows what the heck they are doing, .......and the tools to do it with.....
Now I'm not implying here, ...that it can't be done at home,
.....But, while I was browsing, ....I came across this double page spread, ....there were little parts all over the place, ...with little dotted lines going through them all, .....it looked like it had just exploded.....
Which can pretty much be the result, ...if, ....something isn't "torqued" quite right, ....or a "special tool", isn't used in the assembly, ....or an errant piece is installed backward, upside down, ...or sideways,
......You kinda get my drift here.....
I really wouldn't recommend "dickin" around down there, .....unless of course, ......you're planning a career move,

Luckily, ....I inherited a bunch of them from my buddy, ....so all I had to buy was the wood....
Got the foundation up late sat. afternoon......
That was the easy part, ......This morning I tackled the "peak" of this project, ....
If you're building from the ground up, ....no problem, ....cut your pieces the same length, ....and let the boards fall where they may......
I, .... had to make sure the boards "ended up", ....on my foundation....
A little "ground" work......
After some serious trig calculations, ...and some serious profanity, ....cause roofs and trig., .....have nothing in common, .....I was underway, ......I think
Believe it or not, ......I really used to do this kind of stuff, ....way back when, ....
Well, ...I guess the brain waves finally started clicking, ....and things went pretty well after that.....
Almost halfway done.....
Took some time out to organize a few things, ....(tripping over them lot's of times, ....will do that to ya
)
Workin on the second half now.......
And,
We're almost there, .....just have to screw all the pieces together
I need to look for the right sized tarp now,
.....and preferably in a "neighbourhood" friendly colour, ......just don't want that standard blue or orange "eye sore"
I've been doing some "inside" work on the bilge pump, ...hopefully, ...just a couple of screws and wire hookups to finish up that project.....
That will definitely be my next report.......

You know, ....I had thought about plywood,
...or a thin layer of somethin', ...just to keep the tarp from sagging.....
But I think that's where I might actually run into trouble with needing a building permit, ......they could say it's not a temporary shelter anymore, ....
However, ....If I find the "right" stuff, ...for the "right" price,
.....I'll put it "right" on there, .....whether it's "right", ....or wrong

Skooter, I have tons of black landcape fabric here at work. You're welcome to it if you decide to go with a tarp....this stuff won't flap and make a bunch of noise like a tarp.
It's heavy grade, but I have a ton of it, so you could even double it up. The black will attract heat and heat melt snow off it too.

That sounds like it may work, ......is it waterproof though?
I could put a tarp underneath, ...and then some of that stuff on top, ...right?

Finally got my butt in gear sometime around noon today,
..... and finished off my garage,
..... oops, ...temporary shelter (ouch) I may have been working on the roof, ......but I sure didn't feel on top of the world.....
Anyways, .....couldn't find the tarp I wanted, .....in the size I wanted, ....so I had to overlap two smaller ones.....
I think it worked out pretty good, .......
Now, ....If I can figure out a way to fasten it down,
.....I'd like to throw some of that landscaping fabric over top.....,
Have to think about that this week, .....
That's about it, ....where did this weekend go anyways......?
Guess I got a little, ......... "Saturday Night Fever".......
