If it won't start.

Post by mikemicropterus »

If they can't start it or unlock it from the dock, I have seen a boat however where they came with a chiansaw and cut the motor off the transom. I salvaged boats after their outdrives have been stolen with the boat in the water. There are special engine and drive mounting nuts just like they have for car rrrrims so their is some rudementary protection from them. Like we used to tell our bike owners "If they are going to steal it they will"
The best one was the 40ft cruiser stolen on the St Lawrence near Cornwall, true story, high speed water pursuit with Coast Guard, RCMP and OPP. Over shaols and into marker bouys the drunken cruised until they discovered an unmovable obstacle. A LOCK. Well we will just make them open their doors, knock, knock, knock, they said with no reply so they backed-up and they rammed the door. Well they lock master said NOT BY THE HAIR ON MY CHINNY CHIN CHIN, so they rammed and they rammed and they rammed and you know what the lockmaster instead of going to his friends lock for protection did the sensable thing and called the police. Well high speed pursuit ensues and the carnage continued. What got into these two thieves nobody knows, but the police theorised the boat was headed for a container in Montreal to be sent who knows. So go to bed tonight resplendent in the fact that NOTHING IS SAVE. It takes no special skill start any boat on the water to-day. NO DOOR LOCKS, NO CONCEALED DASH, It's pretty easy to start, so I say if they can't get juice from the battery. It's just a thought. I let my dog sleep in my boat and he wakes up angry.

Keeping your boat your boat

Post by soggy bottom boy »

I have several recommendations:

1) have your coupler tack welded to the frame, otherwise the bad guys can simply use a socket set / change couplers and take your boat;
2) lock the coupler with one of those ball-locks as shown in another post above:
3) always lock your receiver hitch to the vehicle:
4) use chain/wheel lock for one wheel:
5) don't keep stainless props installed for long time:
6) lock your spare tire;
6) and finally, if it is out of sight, it is out of mind.

Unfortunately, I think that most boat theft/equipment theft is done by other guys on the water.

Good luck,
Soggy.
