No not at all.

I think you should stay within 10% of your maximum H.P. Rating on your boat. If you need the extra power you have it, if not you can operate the boat and enjoy your day on the water running approx. 3/4 throttle to get the best mileage.

If your fall to low below your H.P. Rating your motor will be working it's butt off.
But an engine thats within the top 10%, will get up out of the water faster all you do then is back off the throttle and cruise.
The Opti will cut your fuel bills in just under half the amount.

After you get your boat broke in you might have to setup the motor and get it propped to fine tune for the best economy..

Good luck with selecting a motor, it's fun to spend money..

Legend boats/merc opti/towing.

Post by at last »

To 1lastcast.. I notice in this forum you had a few questions which I went thru, I have a 95' legend "Impulse" 16'3" w/75 hp opti.(2005). It had a 50hp merc. 4 stroke when i bought it, was great for fishing but weak for watersports.
The boat was rated for 100hp, so definitely under powered.
I went with the Opti. after months of research & saw most of the 1st & 2nd year of production had work out the kinks.
Its fast, quiet (but not compared to a 4 stroke) & virtually no smoke.
My father still has his 76' 50 hp merc, & when there running side by side you realize why there discontinuing the old 2 stroke engine...exxon valdez...
Re: The legend boat, is a great family boat (multi-tasking). Xcalibur is the lot newer version of the Impulse.
The majority of boat pkgs will be under-powered, as some have previously stated.
Re: Towing, I have a Nissan pathfinder w/3L engine, W/aut./transmission cooler, always got me there & back.
Re: Merc.Opti. go with the 115hp since the 115,90 & 75 are all the same block (1.5L) & same weight.
1st time using this forum hope this help
Cheers
