Post by Jebby »

hi all... i ahve a small pop up trailer and thus no room to tow a boat... i was considering getting a small aluminum that i can tie to the top of the trailer... does anybody know how much weight is safe to load on top of a popup? and if the popup is packed inside how much total weight can be added? any info would be great... thx

One though is the tires, there should be a load weight rating on them.
Take the trailor or a scale( waste transfer station). That should give you a start.

asome.... theres a scale that can be suesd by the city landfill.... i was thinkin about taking the trailer loaded to it so i can get an idea of the weight of the trailer with all our gear... then i will c about te boat... theres a bute down the road for 1500 i think i can get it for 1200... not much but its my first... also a lil worried about the tow vehicle (should be pleanty for both though its a 2004 ford explorer with a V 8 and the trailer is only an 8' duchman popup so adding a boat and gear shouldent be a problem for it.... i hope.... but thx.... dident know what the max load would be... tires are a start.... any idea how much the roof can take? i dont want it to warp under stress....

Another thing you should consider is how you attatch your boat on top of tent trailer. You might consider installing some type of rail or frame to top of trailer. This would distibute weight of boat on rack, rather than forcing down directly on trailer top. I'm not sure how newer tent trailer tops are made now, but years ago on an older trailer, I encountered problems with roof leaking after tying my boat directly. Could have been the boat was too heavy,or roof was not made as well as todays tent trailers. Just a heads up!
